“You have to be smart, yet free” declares Victor Anate, and Number 9 is a manifesto for what that means from first light to the witching hour and beyond. A twenty-first century hymnal to the new modernist woman: one, who like the movement that birthed her, is drawn to experimentation on her own terms, embraces societal changes as an open invitation to reimagining norms and subtle subversion, and on every sighting is an impeccably dressed self-fulfilling prophesy.
OG heroines provide the collection with a backstory. Coco Chanel with her audacious dismantling of Belle Epoque dressing etiquette and Tolstoy’s heroine Anna Karenina with her disregard for societal expectations provide a jump-off that is still resolutely rooted in the realities of the African tropics. For instance, Anate’s debutante astounds the aunties and anyone else with a pulse in an ensemble consisting of derriere revealing French knicker shorts, sequined T and an oversized blouson jacket. For the morning after the night before, there is a micro white mini and sheer shirt and if good girl propriety demands or the elders insist, an off-white boat necked column that is cut close to the body with self-covered buttons and is the kind of code compliant-yet-possessing-a-soupcon-of-scandalous that is the leifmotif of the house.
